Wolviston Women's Institute / WI Hall

Wolviston WI Hall is the hub for the Women’s Institute in Wolviston, a community space where women come together to learn, share, and inspire. Whether it’s crafting, cooking, or discussing important social issues, the WI Hall offers a diverse range of activities that cater to various interests. It’s more than just a meeting place; it’s a sanctuary for women to grow and connect.

The first WI was formed on 16th September 1915 by Canadian Mrs Madge Watt in the wonderfully named village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch (usually shortened to Llanfair PG) in Anglesey, Wales.
In a war torn country of 1915 the institutes were located in rural communities where the motivation was to encourage countrywomen to supply food.

Over the last 100 years the WI has grown enormously with a healthy 6500 institutes throughout England and Wales.
Many WIs own their own halls. For the rest, they are lucky enough to use the facilities of the local village hall and these halls are very well used. Each WI has a monthly meeting where, after the business is over, there is usually a speaker with an interesting talk or entertainment.

Village halls are able to hire out rooms for all our activities. The WIs offer craft classes, flower class, workshops, and cookery classes, games and book clubs. How about keep-fit or darts? There is even the chance to put on a show. We’re not just jam and Jerusalem though; try gin tasting or cocktail making. With a big age range of ladies we offer a varied programme.
The WI is also well known for coffee mornings as part of their own fundraising efforts.

Being a user of a village hall also means fundraising and the WI is keen to do their bit when called upon. They’ll be there at the Christmas or Summer Fares with their home baking and craft stalls.

Some WI members are on the village hall committee too and they help with the daily running, organising, booking and fundraising activities.
