Cleveland Carving Club

Do you already carve​? Or would you like to learn a new skill, something artistic, peaceful and relaxing? 

Would you like to make something memorable with your own hands? To make a gift or a toy for a loved one?

Then we would like to welcome you to Cleveland Carving Club. Wood carving has been in our blood since we painted animals on the ceilings and walls of caves, and we had the use of sharp stone tools. All over the world we have worked in wood for  religious, ceremonial, tribal, mechanical, artistic reasons and in for the decorating of furniture and our homes. We have made articles in wood from crowns to spoons and all in between, marvelling in the simplicity or complexity of their making. Across the ages wood has had meaning and today we are trying to keep those skills that have been passed down to us alive and develop them into our modern world.

Carving can be a relaxing and therapeutic pastime with tangible outcomes to delight our families and friends.

What do we offer?

A friendly, informal atmosphere in which you can try out the ancient art of wood carving. New members are given use of the clubs tools, stands, and 4 weeks free trial period, so you don’t need to spend anything until you wish to join the club.

We also supply free your first piece of wood to work on. We use a mentoring system when one of our experienced carvers will guide you through your first training carving. From there you can choose to work on a project of your own design or then try out our second training project. 

From time to time we hold small in house talks to pass on information to members, do group carving projects and visit local points of interest to learn more about the history behind our art. Occasionally we invite people in to demonstrate other skills which can be incorporated into woodcarving.

There is a free cuppa and time to chat, so enjoy!

We meet at St Cuthbert’s Church Hall on the Green in Billingham, TS23 1BW, on Thursdays between 11.30am and 2pm and on Saturday mornings from 9am to 12 noon
