Friends of Billingham Green
RESIDENTS and businesses are being called to support a new Friends of Billingham Green group to celebrate both the extraordinary heritage of Old Billingham and also the exciting events and activities that are taking place now. The Friends group is being set up by Charles Wellington, Church Warden of St Cuthbert’s Church, and Matt Campbell of Arthur Robinson House which is at 13-14 The Green, and everyone is invited to take part in this inclusive community group.
Mr Wellington said, “St Cuthbert’s Church is such a wonderful historic building. We are excited to be part of a venture that involves our local community and we’re looking forward to bringing the church alive with the events and activities planned.”
Matt, who is an actor as well as a trained wellbeing coach, is also excited to be launching a new community choir that, although making St Cuthbert’s its home, is a secular group for everyone, regardless of religion or culture. He said, “There is so much going on that people don’t always realise. This group will give us a chance to develop real community spirit.”
St Cuthbert’s is welcoming a new Vicar, Mahalha Wachepa, to join Rector David Brooke, and is holding an Autumn Fayre on Saturday 30th September, 11am to 3pm. A new Rainbows and Brownie unit based at St Cuthbert’s is also in the planning.
Janet Turley, former Billingham Town Councillor and owner of Posh Frocks on Station Road, is organising the Autumn Fayre. “It will be lovely to welcome everyone into the church to celebrate this beautiful season,” she said. Mr Wellington added, “So everyone, do join the Friends, and bring your ideas and time with you. We will be holding a first open meeting in the next month or so to discuss where we are going.”
